The course offers a selection of art historical case studies from South Asia that reflect the developments in art production and reception during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The idea is to understand works of art within the broader context of regional visual regimes, exhibition spaces, and political milieu. The course is designed for students interested in learning more about art historical methodologies that critically engage with terminology issues in art historical writings, canons, and contested heritage. Furthermore, the seminar will explore the institutional frameworks and their role in shaping the Indian Subcontinent's art history. The focus will also be on artistic experiments and practices that have responded to established canons and pedagogies to reshape art networks transregionally.
