This course aims to develop the concept of (r)existence in the context of urban citizenship. The central thesis posits that cities are hubs of polarization, where diverse flows of people, goods, and information lead to unequal vulnerabilities and typical social stratifications, creating both vulnerabilities and concrete possibilities for resistance. Therefore, the course will explore the theoretical and practical dimensions of the concept of cities as spaces of intense territorialization and institutional dynamics. We critically assess the processes through which urban boundaries are constructed and contested through practices of (r)existence, examining mechanisms that either naturalize and stabilize violence as well as disrupt urban spaces. Special focus will be given to the dialectic between "the right to the city" (droit à la ville) and "the right of city” (droit de cité), exploring how these rights manifest in policy and social practice, and their implications for the (r)existing citizens' everyday life and mobility within urban spaces. In its practical dimension, the course seeks to map and understand radical acts of resistance and subversion within the Cityscape (what has been hereunto termed as “(r)existence”). We examine how marginalized individualities and communities navigate and contest these urban vulnerabilities. This segment emphasizes the potential of urban spaces as arenas for cultural invention and the formation of new models of citizenship that go beyond conventional frameworks, fostering a critical understanding of how urban environments can be restructured to promote inclusive forms of urban living. Students will emerge with a refined ability to critically analyse urban phenomena, equipped with the tools to discern and influence the dynamics of inclusion and exclusion in global cities. They will be adept at identifying and evaluating forms of urban resistance and subversion, and capable of proposing actionable, theoretically informed solutions to enhance urban citizenship. Designed for students and professionals in urban studies, sociology, political science, and related disciplines, this course offers vital insights and skills for those aiming to impact the urban configurations of modern global cities. |
