This course seeks to survey trends and patterns of life and thought in the literary and cultural works of Asian Diasporas in the greater Eastern African hinterlands; the Indian Ocean Coasts and its islands. The course seeks to examine perspectives of Asian Diasporas in Eastern Africa through standpoints of race, gender, and geography from the colonial period to the present times. Key focus areas shall be theoretical foundations of Diaspora studies, texts and contexts of South Asian Diasporas, South Asian Diasporic voices in prose, drama, poetry and selected cultural texts. Students are expected to prepare a research paper on critical literary and cultural artefacts of South Asian Diasporic inclinations, including fiction, film, and small magazines associated with influential voices of Rajat Neogy, Jameela Siddiqui, Sophia Mustapha, MG Vassanji, Rasna Warah, among others. These shall be studied for style and recurrent themes.
