What do you know about Scotland? Most people will answer: whisky (not whiskey- that is Irish), tartan and Braveheart. Scotland - aside from the stereotypes - is not a particularly well-known country. In taking this course, you will gain a deeper understanding of this wee land by examining its historical roots to present day and its political landscape, especially the West Lothian question and the Scottish parliament. The differences between the Scottish legal and education systems and their English versions will also be investigated as well as society and culture with reference to contemporary Scottish literature (especially tartan Noir, feminism and entertainment). Upon completion of this course, you will not only have broadened your knowledge of Scotland's rich history and culture, but also have improved your language skills and have expanded your vocabulary through using authentic material, including newspaper articles, video and podcasts. To pass the course: you are asked to give a presentation on an aspect of Scotland and manage the discussion thereafter, write an essay and pass an end of term test |
