A convulsed period that saw two world wars and the global collapse of old social systems and political orders (among other modern ailments), the twentieth century offers a highly dynamic backdrop for the development of the British stage. The seminar seeks to give an overview of the plays that shaped this period in interaction with the historical events that in turn determined their production and reception. Among the course´s protagonists are the usual suspects – Samuel Beckett, Tom Stoppard, John Osborne, and Harold Pinter – complemented by representatives from the lesser-known political theater groups forming in Britain from the 1960s onward and playwrights from the last decades of the century, Edward Bond, Christina Reid, and Simon Stephens.
This course is part of the summer lecture series “Survey of English Literatures” (BA EN Module 4). The final examination (Modulabschlussprüfung) is comprised of short-answer questions and an essay part with a choice of topics from this seminar. Students therefore need to have attended the lecture last summer (or the summer of 2022) in order to take the MAP this semester. |
