This course is concerned with the relation between grammar and social meaning. More specifically, we will discuss various linguistic phenomena with a focus on doubling phenomena (e.g., negative concord, modal concord) with regard to their grammatical properties and social meanings in different contexts of use. The underlying assumption is that the linguistic behavior of a speaker, e.g., the choice of words, structures and varieties, can give rise to different social meanings, i.e., pragmatic inferences that comprehenders draw about the speaker’s background and persona. Replying on current theories of linguistics, language processing and language perception, we will also discuss methodological issues of studying grammar and social meaning in the form of presentations, discussions and interactive group work. |
