Pragmatics is concerned with the interpretation of linguistic expressions in context, which is related to but can go – sometimes very far – beyond sentence semantics. In this course, we will provide a survey of research topics in pragmatics and their relation to grammar (phonology, syntax, semantics) and language acquisition. The course consists of 1) lectures on key pragmatic notions and phenomena (e.g., presupposition, implicature, intonational meaning, indexicality), and 2) short student presentations followed by general discussions on research methods of pragmatics.
