How does the form of a short story structure the reading experience? How does reading a short story differ from that of other literary forms? In this seminar, we will explore North American short stories from the 19th to the 21st centuries, using reader response theory and cognitive approaches in order to understand our own reading experiences. What happens when a short story is translated into a different medium? The creative element in this seminar will be the attempt of translating a short story into a different genre, medium, or narrative perspective. Prospective teachers will engage with questions on a literary form that will be important for their future teaching. All texts will be made available on Moodle at the beginning of the semester.
Course requirements: regular attendance, two written assignments (one creative, one reflexive), one oral assignment (input to one short story). |
