The convergence of culture and politics in 20th-century Eastern Europe - Detailseite

This course takes as its starting point the recognition that art/culture and politics seem to have been always already entangled in East Central Europe in various ways and for various reasons. We will zoom on in three different historical periods (the interwar decades, the postwar period, the and post-socialist / contemporary era) to explore the changing modalities of this convergence. Our discussions will occasionally leave the domain of the fine arts and venture out in the broader field of culture, eg., sport and lifestyle trends.

A detailed syllabus with compulsory reading list will be distributed at the first session. Readings will be both in English and German; discussion at class will be possible both in English and German, depending on the composition (language skills) of course participants.

The course takes the format of a close reading seminar, and the rganization of the sessions will alternate across the following modules:
- introductory reading and discussion sessions
- reading retreats
- text discussion lead by mini-teams composed of course participants
- “plenary” text discussion with all course participants’ active input
- the study and analysis of corresponding art works/projects
