How to do European history? Current approaches and controversies - Detailseite

In this course we aim to analyze different approaches to the study of European History. We will discuss varying concepts of European History and scrutinize European History in the longue durée. We will analyze current controversies in the field of European History that question Europe’s borders and margins, its foundational narratives, and its periodization.

The discussion will be based on the reading of key texts on different aspects of European History from the Early Modern period to Contemporary history embracing a wide range of methodological approaches: from political history to intellectual history, from gender history to historical anthropology or cultural history. The course addresses mainly students from the European History Master program, but welcomes a limited number of other HU/FU-Master students with a special interest in reconsidering European History. It is intended to question historiographical presumptions and to refine methodical skills.

The course will take place in a “hybrid” format (meaning via zoom and on-site at the same time) and will be open to EHM-students from all over Europe. In addition, individual sessions will be taught by distinguished historians from EHM- partner universities.
