Toni Morrison is/was one of the most significant American writers. Not only because of her extensive historiographic oeuvre (one could call her novels historiographic metafiction) reaching from the 17th century to today, but also because of her themes: trauma, memory, representation, history, migration, property, identities, prejudice, racism, misogyny, whiteness, discrimination etc. and because of her theoretical work. Morrison, because her books can be quite complex and, in terms of language, sometimes difficult even though beautiful, has not made it quite into the German high school canon. However, as she offers an extremely rich tableau of knowledge (historically, topically, theoretically, narratively...) I want to explore four of her novels with you and see what can be done with such an important (and well-known) author in school. We will concentrate on four of Morrison’s novels (see below) and work with them from several perspectives and on several levels (narratological and cultural), not forgetting to ask how we can approach African American experience and literature in the classroom, how we can discuss racism and discrimination, and how we deal with whiteness.
