This course provides participants with a forum for the discussion of representations of maritime land- and waterscapes in American literature. We will look at the different dimensions of such representations, historicize them, and explain them with the help of theories that put their specific aesthetics across genres, their transformations across different literary periods, and their transnational aspects into sharper focus. The emerging field of Blue Humanities will play a central role in this seminar, as we will learn about the impact that the analysis of blue spaces in literature and culture has had on theorization, and on the development of transdisciplinary approaches in particular. Information regarding course requirements will be provided in the first session.
