In this seminar, we read and discuss some of Shakespeare’s shipwreck plays. We explore the structural and poetological functions of shipwrecks and discuss the role of maritime traffic in early modern culture. Shipwrecks and maritime traffic allow for an integrated approach to Shakespeare’s theatre that takes questions of plot, rhetoric, and dramaturgy into account as well as concrete historical developments: actual voyages that shaped the early modern imagination but also, more generally, the acceleration of global commerce and colonisation.
Plays to choose from are plenty. Our selection will likely include Twelfth Night, Pericles, and The Tempest. |
