This course introduces doctoral students and advanced master’s students (final year) to a range of scientific practices for building explanations and constructing knowledge in human-environment research and gives them the opportunity to present, discuss, and sharpen their own research projects and interests. Perspectives covered include science studies, ethnography, ethics, numerical modelling, remote sensing, statistical inference, and transdisciplinarity. These perspectives will be presented in a series of overview sessions taught by senior IRI THESys researchers and organized around the theme of climate change, to showcase different thought-styles and practices as they are articulated and enacted within a specific research domain. In the two final sessions of the class, students will present their own research projects and/or interests in groups, which includes assigning preparatory literature to be read by all in advance of the sessions.
The seminar takes place Fridays, 10:15-11:45, starting October 28th, in Rudower Chaussee 12B, Adlershof, room 2.25. (there will be no class on October 21st due to the IRI THESys semester kick-off). It is a requirement for students to participate actively in discussions during class and to prepare for class by reading the assigned literature.
