This class introduces students to concepts that have been developed over the past years at the intersection of the environmental humanities, science and technology studies and feminist theory. During the seminar, we will explore ways of translating concepts for human-environment relation that have been developed in relation to environmental catastrophe, planetary destruction, and pollution/toxicity to urban everyday contexts. How does Anna Tsings' (2017) question about how to inhabit 'feral landscapes' translate to urban wastelands? What happens if we study care relations between residents and all kinds of urban 'matters' as practices that enable ecological reparation (cf. Bellacasa 2017, Papadopoulos 2022)? Which research subjects and methodologies emerge if we think about 'exposure' as both an existential condition of vulnerability and a way of doing research (Alaímo 2016, Yussof 2007). Together, we will explore these and similar concepts through in-class text work, essays and other forms of written assignments. |
