This course will prepare students to chart new directions in creating, managing, and using textual and visual data for art historical research and scholarship. A kind of digital methods course, it will familiarize students with critical issues related to information technologies and their use in art history, contextualizing contemporary developments like computer vision within a longer history that includes analog photography and the construction of structured databases like the HU’s Census of Antique Art and Architecture. In addition to addressing historical and theoretical concerns, participants will gain the basic skills necessary to organize and manage their own research data, as well as and learn key concepts and vocabulary related to information technologies and the digital humanities. Students will also have the opportunity to engage in hands-on experimentation with technologies such 3D imaging and data visualization. |
