Despite its shared grounds of belief and practice with all other Muslim denominations, Shia Islam provides its own distinctive interpretation of religion in theological, legal, and social dimensions. The present course is an introduction to the main aspects of belief and practice among the Shia Muslims. The students will acquire basic knowledge on the historical formative period of Shia Islam, as well as its modern, contemporary and transformative dynamics. This includes the reading of selected sources and discussion into the similarities and differences among various Shia currents. A variety of Shia perspectives from the past and present will be related to concepts of contemporary relevance (e.g. faith and tradition, diversity, gender, education, and politics). In addition, the social significance of Shia Muslims will be addressed in both secular and religious environments in Europe, especially in Germany; in order to provide an overview of the institutions and actors in the field. |
