This course aims both to improve participants' philosophical writing skills in general, and in particular to hone their skills at writing publishable papers. Though we will read and discuss some recent scholarship on ancient Greek philosophy, we will discuss these articles primarily as pieces of writing rather than focussing on their content. Most of our time will be spent reflectively practicing some things which participants already do, or should do - for instance, taking account of who the intended audience is, outlining, revising for focus and concision, using quotes and citations effectively, etc. We'll also talk about common problems and discuss strategies for publishing.
Before the seminar begins, participants should choose one paper which they would like to improve in the course of the seminar, and we will devote the bulk of the seminar meetings to concrete work on those papers. MA and doctoral students who wish to take part must contact the instructor by email ( joseph.bjelde@hu-berlin.de) by 10.10.2022 to enroll, and should attach a current draft of the paper they want to work on during the course. This course is not suitable for BA students or for MA students from other disciplines. |
