Dieses Seminar bietet einen umfassenden Überblick über die politische,
wirtschaftliche, soziale, religiöse und kulturelle Geschichte Ostafrikas, als die
Region von folgenden politischen Einheiten dominiert wurde: den Swahili-
Stadtstaaten, wie dem Sultanat Kilwa (10.-16. Jahrhundert), den Portugiesen (16.
Jahrhundert), den Omani (17.-19. Jahrhundert), den Europäischen Kolonisatoren
(19. Jahrhundert) und auch die Zeit der Entkolonialisierung im 20. Jahrhundert. In
diesem Zusammenhang werden wir die damaligen Königreiche im Inneren
Ostafrikas, wie das Königreich von Buganda, untersuchen. Der Handel mit
Gewürzen, Elfenbein und Sklaven durch die Dhau (das Kamel des Indischen
Ozeans) wird im Hinblick auf den Handel im Indischen Ozean erörtert. Der
kulturelle Aspekt wird durch die Geschichte der Musik, z. B. des Tarab bei
Hochzeiten und in der Politik, repräsentiert. Die Einflüsse des Islams und des
Christentums auf die oben genannten Themen werden ebenfalls diskutiert.
This seminar gives a broad overview of the political, economic, social, religious
and cultural history of East Africa, during the period in which the region was
dominated by the following political entities: the swahili city-states such as the
Sultanate of Kilwa (10th-16th century), the Portuguese (16th century), the Omani
(17th-19th century), European colonizers (19th century) and also the period of
Decolonization in the 20th century. In the same context, we will also study the
empires of the interior of East Africa of the time such as the Empire of Buganda.
The trade in spices, ivory, slaves by the dhow (the camel of the Indian Ocean) will
also be discussed in relation to the trade in the Indian Ocean at large. The
cultural aspect will be represented by the history of music such as Tarab in
weddings and politics. The influences of Islam and Christianity in all of these
themes mentioned above will also be discussed. |
| Prüfung |
"Die Prüfung" (Examination) consists of the following:
-Regular presence in the courses and participation in the discussion; +
-The student must make two presentations, each one of them followed by an
Essay. The first Essays, should have 2000 words/4pages (plus bibliography and
footnotes), and the second one should have 4000 words/8 pages (plus
bibliography and footnotes).
-For those who want to have only attestation of participation
(Teilnahmebescheinigung /Unterschrift), they must make the two presentations
only without writing the essays |
