Methoden und Theorien:

New historicism, feminist, and postcolonial theories will be discussed in the course. To enable a close reading of the texts, methods associated with semiology will be engaged.

Kursinhalt:

The main part of this seminar will aim at the origin of African theatre. This approach allows us to delve into early debates engaged by critics suggesting the non-existence of the genre. Orality and performances that  draw on storytelling, mime, dance, epic narratives, rituals and ritualistic performances will also make up part of the seminar. The course will examine early theatre movements like the Yoruba Operas and the Ghanaian Concert Party with focus on influences and transformations.  Engaging with these elements will allow us to project the specific cultural elements of West African performances with specific trends and movements in focus. How and why these have influenced  the genre will be looked into in order to follow the dynamism of the aesthetic form.  Major political and social questions that have inspired the thematic of African performances will be explored in correlation with the societies from which the performances and drama emanate. The second part of the seminar will embody  stage readings of excerpts of some of the performances and theatre explored in the seminar. Texts selected from the course will be employed to engage important ideologies and practices associated with gender, class, race, culture and society.

Lernziele:

This course will help develop the ability of students to debate important topics in theatre in a classroom environment. The course will further create the platform for participants to voice their different opinions on topics that will help them to independently find engaging topics and carry out research on them as employ relevant theories to analyze literary material. Both oral and analytical skills through presentations and full participation in class by the students will be encouraged to give them a base in view of their end of term and study exams.

Students will be expected to actively participate in the course. Further, they will be invited to do short presentations.
