Aimed at Master of Education students and their future teaching interests, this course is designed to explore literary writings about London. We shall investigate how writers responded to and imagined London, how they represented this huge city as a maze, a landscape, and a place for strolling, a place replete with crime and poverty as well as pleasures of consumption and excitement, of sociability and loneliness.
Starting with brief extracts (poetry and prose) from 18th and 19th century writings (Blake, Wordsworth, de Quincey, Dickens), our principal focus will be on 20th century fiction. Set texts will be Virginia Woolf`s Mrs Dalloway (1925) and Linda Grant’s A Stranger City (2019).
A Moodle course with the shorter primary and some secondary texts will be available (password: Capital). However, you will need to obtain your own copy of the novels. |
