In this seminar, we are going to explore the potential of storytelling as a method for the EFL classroom. Starting from the theoretical assumption that picture books can be regarded as vehicles for (critical) visual literacy, we will analyse a selection of picture books with regard to criteria such as the interaction of pictures and words or the subject positions that they offer to their readers. We will then reflect upon their suitability for EFL learners of different age groups and school types.
In a phase of group work, seminar participants will be expected to work on their own storytelling skills as well as to develop teaching materials for a picture book of their choice, based on current (empirical) research on storytelling and related notions. |
