The class introduces the basics of contemporary semantic theory, which is used as the "lingua franca" of semantic research. We will review its general properties and assumptions, its building blocks, and then focus on the central issue of compositionality, i.e., how the meaning of larger constituents is determined by their syntactic structure and the semantic contributions of their parts. Throughout the class we will apply the theory to (increasingly complex) specimens of natural language. |
