The course covers the fundamental processes of the Earth system, such as the Earth's energy balance, the greenhouse effect, energy and mass transport and exchange in the atmosphere and in the soil. We will develop models of different complexity that will help us to understand these phenomena. To do this, we will review the basics of computational fluid mechanics and cover some essential numerical concepts needed to understand and solve problems in the Earth system. The theoretical concepts are strengthened through practical exercises using Jupyter notebooks. Knowledge will be extended during the course and applied to real problems from ongoing research projects. Towards the end of the course, the PALM numerical weather prediction model will also be used to investigate more complex atmospheric processes and phenomena. In addition to application, the course will focus on processing, handling and analysing spatio-temporal data with Python. Participants have the opportunity to work closely with ongoing research projects and to work on selected case studies in a very research-oriented way. |
