The Dominican theologian and philosopher, Meister Eckhart (ca. 1260-1329) stands as one of the more controversial figures of late-medieval theology. Sharing many of the same teaching accolades at Paris as his predecessor, Thomas Aquinas, Eckhart would ultimately find his place in the history of the Western Christianity obscured by a Papal Bull that found a selection of his theological points to be conclusively heretical to the teaching of the Roman Catholic Church. Nevertheless, Eckhart stands once again as a figure with a core set of teachings that resonates within and holds meaning for the world today. Topics ranging from absolute identity with God, to gender in spirituality, to detachment from worldly means of self-identification, and heterodoxy make Eckhart a truly unique study from his own time and, even more, one that can incite conversation in matters pertaining to the complex religious milieu we now inhabit. |
