This block seminar introduces students to the concepts of Global Health, Planetary Health, and One-Health. The goal of this seminar is to discuss existing critiques and to elaborate own definitions of these concepts from the perspective of the humanities and social sciences – drawing in particular from theories and concepts at the intersection of Human Geography and Gender Studies. “Decentering Global Health” then means to critically reflect on human-centrism, (neo-)coloniality, gendered, classed and racialized definitions in contemporary discourse about “health”. We will concentrate on discourses about health that refer to cities, understood here as more-than-human/multispecies habitats. Taking the urban as our starting point, student assignments will consist of term papers that elaborate own propositions/concepts for a decentered – i.e. more-than-human, decolonial, and/or feminist – understanding of health for contemporary urban studies. |
