Students acquire basic knowledge of Islamic Mysticism and its general similarities with and differences from Islamic theology. You will gain basic knowledge of the most important historical trends, discourses, representatives and schools in Islamic Mysticism; as well as an overview of their key concepts, terms, and sources. You will learn how to contextualize the major themes of Islamic Mysticism within Rumi’s Book of Mathnawi. In addition, you will be able to reflect critically on the existing literature pertaining to Rumi’s intellectual heritage and analyze his moral, mystical and religious teachings in view of practical matters and contemporary social issues. |
