A course by Joel Whitebook in the series “Psychoanalysis and Society”. Freud’s theory of culture and religion was formulated in terms of the Oedipus Complex, which he considered “the nuclear complex” of civilization. And, with a few important exceptions, the project of integrating psychoanalysis and critical theory, initiated by the first generation of the Frankfurt School, also took the Oedipus Complex as its frame of reference. Today, however, our attempt to continue that project is located in a different historical-hermeneutical context, namely, after the pre-Oedipal turn in psychoanalysis. Therefore, in this seminar we will examine several classical texts in an attempt to understand the nature and significance of pre-Oedipal turn. Authors may include Freud, Donald Winnicott, André Green, and Hans Loewald.
The course is designed for advanced MA students. Please register at philohsc@hu-berlin.de before April 29th and indicate your previous experience with psychoanalytical theories as well as your interests with respect to the specific course. You will receive time and date of the preliminary session via e-mail upon successful registration. |
