In modern, democratic societies, individuals’ life courses are no longer supposed to be determined by factors such as birth, wealth, race or gender (even though in practice these factors continue to play an important role). Instead, life chances are supposed to be allocated according to individual merit. Education plays a central role in this allocation process, since educational certificates are widely used as an expression of individual merit. The seminar will explore this central role education plays for allocation processes in modern societies. It will deal both with general and normative questions. Also, it will take a closer look at various empirical cases.
The seminar will be taught in English, but seminar papers can be written in German. |
