The basic idea of event semantics is the assumption that verbs have an additional argument position for events. This idea turned out to be very fruitful in natural language semantics (e.g., for the semantics of temporal modifiers like "for five hours" or the interpretation of nominalisations), but brought with it a host of new questions (among them the question of what events really are and how they fit in with aspectual classification).
This seminar offers an introduction into the field of event semantics. Students will be able to follow the course without previous knowledge in formal semantics (please contact me beforehand in this case to select a suitable topic for your presentation), but such knowledge is very welcome, because it greatly facilitates the understanding of some of thetopics to be discussed.
To obtain a certificate of attendance (`Teilnahmeschein'), students are requested to do a presentation in class and to attend regularly. |
