This course is a sequel of the first course on Constraint-Based Grammar, which took place in the summer term. In constraint-based grammar formalisms, syntactic rules are constraints on well-formed linguistic structures. The rules are formalised with the help of feature structures (pairs of attributes and their values, e.g., `singular' and `plural' for number). This yields a very powerful and flexible formalism, which allows a transparent representation of even complex linguistic facts.
The course is open to participants of the first course and newcomers alike. Newcomers will get access to the material of the first course. The first part of the course is based on the textbook "Syntactic theory" by Ivan Sag et al. (2003, 2nd ed.). The book is made available via the print shop in the usual fashion. We will cover central syntactic phenomena like infinitival complements and long-distance dependencies. In the second part of the course, we will read selected papers on topics like the syntax-semantics interface and argument structure |
