In different ways, North American novels published in the last ten years respond to and engage with contemporary cultural and political developments while also grappling with the legacies of US and Canadian history. Invariably, they examine and rewrite social hierarchies based on 'race,' class, gender, sexuality, ability, etc., frequently mobilizing innovative narrative techniques in this connection. Together, they offer a multi-faceted portrayal of the current North American cultural landscape while testifying to the ongoing vitality of North American literary traditions.
Credit for the course requires reading excerpts from the novels (and one entire text), participating in class discussions, and organizing one session (together with some fellow-students). |
