As a response to the crisis of representative democracy, all European countries aim at involving citizens more directly into policy-making and a large range of different practices have been experimented with. In this intensive course, we analyse the patterns of citizen engagement in Europe. Both conventional and unconventional, innovative forms of political participation will be dealt with and we pay special attention to some of the most up-and-coming citizen involvement practices (such as political consumption, service user involvement or citizen juries) and to emerging actors in the field (such as lay experts or participation professionals).
On the grounds of a thorough theoretical and methodological preparation, students conduct qualitative case studies of specific practices and institutions of political participation in groups. |
