Hinweis: Bei den auslaufenden Studiengängen ist es ein HS. Perhaps no other genre symbolizes the "old" America, the America of the WASP, the redneck, the economy of conquest and assimilation as much as the Western. In this class we will discuss the mythology of the Western and its historical development from early to classical to revisionist movies. Topics for discussion will be the myth of the West, the psychology of the Western, the Western as formula fiction, the spaces of the Western, the times of the Western, the Western and its Other, the Western and the heterosexual matrix. The theoretical impulses will be supplied by John Cawelti, Richard Slotkin, Gilles Deleuze, Elisabeth Bronfen and others. A selection of Western movies will be shown outside of class (see Moodle). These movies will serve as material for our discussions. Reading: There are two good books to start—unfortunately they are both hard to get in Germany. Don't buy them for 30 euros, but if you can get them to a reasonable prize they are: David Lusted, The Western, Longman:2003 and Gregg Rickman (ed.), The Western Reader, Limelight, 2004.· A reader with texts to be read for class will be available at "Sprintout", Georgenstraße, S-Bahn Bogen 190. Requirements: Students are supposed to organize the film viewings. Each student has to select one movie for closer viewing—s/he is then the expert on that movie in our discussions. Staatsexamen und Magister-students have to write a 15-20 page term paper. MA students may also have to select a self-study topic. You have to register for this class in the e-learning platform Moodle. As a password use the last word of the course title. In Moodle you will find the syllabus for the class. |
