The seminar offers an introduction to early modern theatre. We will read some of Shakespeare’s tragedies together, but we will also look in detail at the material conditions of playacting around 1600 and at social problems that inform early modern plays: gender relations, questions of government, global trade, the significance of reputation in a culture of credit, etc. Looking at early modern theatre opens up an avenue into the past, but it also offers an introduction to plays that are still strikingly relevant today and staged all over the world.
If you want to prepare for this class, begin by reading Othello. We will decide on the other plays in the beginning of the term.
We will work with the Arden editions of Shakespeare’s plays. |
