How the blended learning will be implemented depends on the development of the pandemic; Details will be agreed upon with the participants at the beginning of the semester.
Content: This seminar offers a detailed examination of mainland China’s efforts to achieve „green transformation“ (绿色转型). We begin with an exploration of the concept of the anthropocene and what it implies for state leaders’ dreams of sustainable development. With these insights in mind, we then turn to a close look at key elements of China’s climate and environmental politics.
Learning objectives:
- To introduce current academic and policy debate about a.) viable sustainability pathways and green transformations for countries, and b.) the relative merits of democratic and authoritarian forms of government in achieving sustainability
- To introduce students to the key features of China’s “environmental authoritarianism,” a key reference point in global debate about approaches to sustainability
- To develop students’ skills of oral argument and debate in English
Course evaluation: Participation, short assignments
Thematic reference to pillar and module: This seminar builds on the Einführungvorlesung lecture on “Governance in the Anthropocene” in the Lokal-Globale Herausforderungen stream.
Requirements: Some familiarity with modern Chinese history as well as contemporary politics is desirable but not required.
