This course comparatively examines the history and development of and current challenges to the regional human rights courts in Europe, the Americas, and Africa. The course introduces students to the origins, main architecture, strengths, and weaknesses of three regional courts: The European Court of Human Rights, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, and the African Court on Human and People’s Rights. The aim of the course is to explore the regional systems for the protection of human rights while reflecting on their distinct and common characteristics as well as their potentials and limitations in the current context. The course will familiarize students with the main discussions about the operations of human rights law in different regional settings. |
