How does the Jewish tradition relate to those who do not belong to the Jewish community? Is there any difference between the Hebrew Bible’s depiction of the Edomites and the Amalekies, and the way in which the Talmud relates to “Goyim”? Is there a special category for Christians and Muslims? Will non-Jews be saved in the end of times? And what do they have to do in order to be “justified”? By reading and discussing primary sources from different periods in Jewish history (Hebrew bible; Mishna and Talmud, Medieval halakha and theology, early and late modern Jewish philosophy), the seminar will map the various attitudes and concerns of the Jewish tradition with other religions, and with non-Jewish cultures.
The seminar is based on a close reading of primary sources, and is held in English. |
