This course is not a tool to proselytize or convert. Rather, it seeks to clarify the ground for foundational belief in a transcendent that relies on theological precepts, reason, and the experience of the world. Students will follow the tri-partite argument of theologian and philosopher David Bentley Hart, involving the nature of God, the nature of human consciousness, and the ability to distinguish reality from illusion. The engagement with Bentley Hart draws on a sociological and hermeneutical understanding of atheism and non-religious worldviews in Germany and the United States. Furthermore, it will be considered if and how his line of thought can inspire professional communication about faith and religion in church, school and society. |
