Tutor: Diana Martsynkovska
Supervised by: Prof. Dr. Martin Klepper, Institut für Anglistik und Amerikanistik, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.
Description: The tutorial approaches climate change through its reflections in literary and cinematic texts within the climate fiction frame. It critically explores the Western discourse of climate change and environmental justice and the structures of racism, gender inequality, and the legacy of colonialism embodied in it. Ensuring the decolonizing and intersectional approach, the tutorial highlights a wide range of perspectives on climate futures and environmental justice offered by women*, Black, Indigenous, and People of Color.
Using theoretical background from a variety of disciplines such as critical race theory, gender studies, environmental justice studies, ecofeminism, ecocriticism, postcolonialism, cultural, literary and film studies, the tutorial creates an interdisciplinary research frame to approach both primary sources offered for case studies and students’ individual/group research projects. The tutorial might be interesting for students from different subject areas, such as American Studies, Cultural Studies, Film Studies, Literary Studies, Environmental Studies, Gender Studies, Journalist and Media Studies, Social Sciences, etc. The tutorial is open for students from all departments on the master and bachelor level, no prior knowledge is required. Participants should be proficient in English (B2 or higher), as all the materials and discussions will be held in English.
