This course is an introduction to Asian American Literature, with an emphasis on the various historical, geopolitical, social, political and economic contexts in which these texts were produced, and the their engagement with critical issues such as nationhood, citizenship, immigration, diaspora, as well as the politics of identity and representation. We will read various genres of writing such as memoirs, novels, short stories, non-fiction, poetry, and graphic novels by authors such as Maxine Hong Kingston, Jhumpa Lahiri, Fae Myenne Ng, Ocean Vuong, Thi Bui, and Amitav Ghosh. Our readings will also draw from various fields of critical inquiry including critical race theory, gender studies, queer theory, postcolonialism, transnationalism, diaspora studies, and ecocriticism.
If there is no complete return to in-person classes this semester, this class will be conducted online. Students are required to join weekly synchronous Zoom sessions at the allocated time of the course. All information regarding this course will be communicated on the course's Moodle site. Excerpts of primary texts as well as secondary texts will be available on Moodle. Please acquire a copy of Thi Bui's The Best We Could Do and Rowan Hisayo Buchanan's Harmless Like You from the library or your local bookstore. |
