Digital Authoritarianism in Comparative Perspective - Detailseite

The advent of digital technologies is transforming politics in democratic systems around the globe. These technologies also have profound implications for political life in non-democracies. This seminar explores the emergence of digital authoritarianism in the People’s Republic of China. Early sessions consider, first, how authoritarian politics works before examining debate about the emancipatory vs. repressive potential of digital technologies in such contexts. Later sessions look in more detail at topics such as citizen expression on Chinese social media, digital nationalism and the scope for dissent.

Regional focus: East Asia (China)

This seminar builds on themes relating to statehood and politics explored in Modules 1 and 2.

Learning objectives:

• To introduce students to the study of authoritarian politics
• To acquaint students with current debate about the consequences of digital innovations for authoritarian rule
• To develop understanding of the role of digital technologies in authoritarian rule in contemporary China
• To develop essay writing skills in English

Course evaluation: Participation, short assignments

Requirements: This seminar assumes some familiarity with modern Chinese history as well as contemporary politics. Ideally, students will have previously completed a China-focused seminar in Modul 2.
