Regional focus: East Asia (China)
This seminar builds on themes relating to statehood and politics explored in Modules 1 and 2.
Learning objectives:
- To introduce students to the study of authoritarian politics
- To acquaint students with current debate about the consequences of digital innovations for authoritarian rule
- To develop understanding of the role of digital technologies in authoritarian rule in contemporary China
- To develop essay writing skills in English
Course evaluation: Participation, short assignments
Requirements: This seminar assumes some familiarity with modern Chinese history as well as contemporary politics. Ideally, students will have previously completed a China-focused seminar in Modul 2.
