This seminar locates popular culture as lived experience, condition and phenomenon in contemporary Philippine society. It investigates how the term popular culture is circulated, re- produced, resisted, and consumed by various publics vis-à-vis the producers of culture, lifestyle, leisure, and representations. Crucially, our reading materials on Philippine popular culture intimate the situated “every day” cultural representations and re-productions of affect and emotions, body, space, time and performances, as well as technology, ecology and globalization
Finally, we will analyze popular culture as a body of knowledge that informs various contexts of the Philippines' sphere of social activities and lived experience economy. The class unpacks the various contexts that are critically entangled with issues of history, geography, and social categories (i.e. class, gender, race, ethnicity). Hence, “Philippine popular culture” is also used as an organizing logic to provide students with several perspectives, theories, issues, debates, disciplines, and methods in exploring the Philippines and understanding the study of popular culture. |
