The module investigates the relationship of the state to law, society, economy, class, authoritarianism, and democracy. It evaluates contributions to modern state theories ranging from Marx to Weber, and from Schmitt to Bourdieu including recent contributions such as Clarke, Holloway, and Bonefeld. With focusing on the subject of the study of politics, the module will have four prominent aims: (i) to develop a recognition of the fundamental figures in modern state theory; (ii) to introduce competing theories of the state; (iii) to develop skills of pulling together insights from different disciplines - politics, economics, sociology, and law, (iv) to operate these theories to understand the current form of state and to examine the rising authoritarianism and transformations in the east and non-Europe countries, such as Poland, Brazil, Hungary, and Turkey.
