The interpretation of linguistic expressions above the word level is determined by their syntactic structure, but there exist so-called ‘structural ambiguities’, in which scope-bearing expressions like modals and quantifying expressions (including, but not restricted to NPs) interact in ways that cannot be put down straightforwardly to their underlying syntactic structure. In this course, we will explore this dependency and review attempts to cope with structural ambiguities. Depending on the previous knowledge of participants we will extend the scope also to cases like beautiful dancer which exhibit such behaviour below the word level. |
