The seminar focuses on modernist literature in English. Driven by a desire for innovation and inspired by English, transatlantic and European networks, modernist and proto-modernist writers developed new narrative techniques. They gave voice to epistemological uncertainty and existential despair, but also celebrated the materiality of language and embraced new aesthetic possibilities. In this course, we will read fiction as well as poetological essays by Joseph Conrad, T.S. Eliot, Henry James, James Joyce, Ford Madox Ford, Djuna Barnes, Katherine Mansfield, and Virginia Woolf. Our focus will be on how formal innovation interacts with social, philosophical and psychological concerns as well as with media history. |
