In this course, students will develop and practise the oral communication skills required to give effective academic presentations to English-speaking audiences. In addition to focusing upon important linguistic, organisational and structural dimensions of academic presentations, the course will enable students to investigate what makes spoken academic discourse in English and German different. Techniques for boosting confidence when speaking and for interacting effectively with English-speaking academic audiences will also be developed. Careful consideration will also be given to the role of voice, intonation and prosody when presenting in English. The thematic focus will be on British-related topics as well as on topics from literary and cultural studies.
This course will take place synchronously online and will include weekly Zoom meetings. Interested students should send an email to michael.davies@hu-berlin.de by Thursday, 14th October 2021 and include details of any language courses they have already attended in modules 1a and 1b of the MA English Literatures programme.
