In this course, we will focus on Aristotle's approach to ethical and political questions, and their place in his philosophical system. We will investigate these issues through a careful reading of Aristotle's two major works in practical philosophy, the Nicomachean Ethics and the Politics. The central topics we will explore include the nature of virtue and how to develop it, the best life for a human being, the relationship between reason and virtue, the role of pleasure and emotions in a good life, the centrality of friendship, justice and its relationship to the political life, the structure of different political systems, the role of women in the polis, and what makes a state flourish. |
