Despite the hopes of many secularists, religious symbols - such as the Hijab, the Kippah, or the Cross - continue to be present in the public sphere. This course reflects on the role of these religious symbols, and through them, on the place of religion in secularized societies. We will examine the public presence of religious symbols from various perspectives - empirical, ethical, sociological, and theological. To what extent, and in what senses, are religious symbols present in the public sphere? Should they be present there, and if so, how? Much of the course will be devoted to the differences between (different) religious and secular epistemologies of the public sphere, as well as their interactions with each other. Does the Hijab, which has been banned in various European contexts, encounter different treatment than the Kippah or the Cross? This course will therefore also address the role of gender and of race in these debates. |
