The Holocaust signified a watershed in Western thought, calling civilization’s most solid intellectual structures into question. As part of this transition, a special challenge was posed to Jewish theology. After the catastrophe, Jewish thinkers turned to revisit the most essential components of their tradition: concepts such as election, covenant, divine justice, and God’s intervention in history were all examined, transformed and adjusted to cope with the shock of the Holocaust’s unprecedented suffering.
The course will explore a variety of responses to this challenge as reflected in the works of prominent Jewish thinkers from various backgrounds and currents within Judaism. |
